SOME EXAMPLES OF FIRE PREVENTION EXPERIENCE

At work, do your duties include performing Inspections.

o       stairwells for people smoking, evidence of smoking

o       loading docks for accumulated trash; porters areas for accumulated oily rags and other flammables (sources of ignition) (fire hazards)

o       stairwells, hallways not clogged with discarded furniture, etc. (need 3 ft. minimum of aisle space) (free of obstructions)

o       doors not chocked open for whatever reason; doors not pad locked.

o       fire extinguishers to see if fully charged or in need of service

o       Signage: exit signs are illuminated and/or in place; signs showing location of extinguishers are in place

o       sprinklers not covered or painted or otherwise tampered with

o       fire hose cabinets – hose in cabinet and nozzle on hose

Are you a lobby security officer that oversees the Fire Command Station, assisting with the operation of the Class E System

Do you Recall the elevators for the Fire Department

Do you assist in conducting Fire Drills or Evacuation Drills.

Are you part of a Fire Brigade, that is, do you actually try to determine the location of what caused the building to go into alarm; or, are you stationed at a floor below the fire floor to direct the Fire Dept.

Re: 5 years v. 3 years of Fire Prevention experience.

This is verbatim from the FSD Notice of exam.  Please note the word Variance.

“Applicants must have five years of applicable experience in fire prevention, building service equipment or a satisfactory combination. A variance of three years of applicable experience is Acceptable”.

This means that if you have between 3 years and 5 years of fire prevention experience, your employer must prepare a Variance Letter asking the Fire Department to make an Exception for you and allow you to be become an FSD with less than 5 years of fire prevention experience.

The FD is not concerned with a person's title – they want to know details of a person’s Fire Prevention experience.

Your Input.

I appreciate your comments. Can you think of any "fire prevention" examples I don't have listed. Please e-mail them to me at:

Thank you.
